Meet Dr. Derek Johnson M.D.
Meet Dr. Johnson….. I would like to give you a transparent picture of who “Dr. J” really is. I think it is important to know who that person truly is behind the white coat caring for your family member.

People describe me as funny, honest, intelligent, joyful, Christian, genuine and of course, boisterous. I can sum up myself with the “!” mark on my counter. I am, as in the military, ”High Speed, Low Drag”!

I was born in Washington D.C. and raised in adjacent Seat Pleasant, MD with my mom, 3 siblings, and in my adolescence, my stepdad joined our crew. During my youth, my local and extended family, and my church, Augustana Lutheran Church, was very significant to me. Those two institutions, really set my foundation who I am today. Sports, church, working, and hanging out with friends took up the majority of my time during my adolescence. Later during my teen years, I became a church youth teacher, and I really have never stopped working with children since.

I graduated with a B.S. from the University of Maryland-College Park. While maintaining high academics, I worked to support myself financially, participated in several activities and was a leader on campus. I was a DJ on the campus radio station, participated in intramural sports and participated in many cross cultural events. In college is where I really began to appreciate the diverse world that we live in. I was on the President’s Student Advisory Board, a member of ODK Leadership Honor Society and was President of my fraternity, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

After college, I attended the University of Pittsburgh-School of Medicine. While there, I joined the United States Army. Even though I had many medical interests, my love for kids led me into the specialty of Pediatrics. My internship/residency was completed at the rigorous and prestigious Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C. After proudly serving 7 years in the U.S. Army, I departed with the rank of Major. I gave up my beloved BDU’s and boots, for scrubs and khakis.

My leadership and volunteerism continued as a general pediatrician for my employers and for my community. After several years, I eventually gave up corporate medicine to follow my dream of owning my own practice. GOD gave me a vision and calling, and I am being obedient and following HIS blueprint. And that above all means putting families above profits.

I am married to my beautiful queen, LaToya, and together we have 4 amazing kids. I enjoy sports, live entertainment, and fine arts. I also take pleasure in riding my motorcycle, and hanging out with my family, friends and fraternity brothers.

I give my greatest effort in serving my community in which I am blessed to be a part of. I am on the Board of the Rutherford County Boys and Girls Club, a TSSAA football official, a concussion consultant for MTSU football team, an associate minister at First Baptist Church of Murfreesboro, as well as, President of my family’s non-profit organization, The Trotter-Johnson Family Foundation, Inc. I also contribute to other charities for the less fortunate.
